Beginning with GolfLog v3.0, a "key file" is required for proper
operation. This file is called "GL.KEY" and it MUST be in the same
directory where GOLFLOG.COM resides. After registering GolfLog v6.1,
you will receive a new "key file" which will unlock all the options that
are available to registered users. This "key file" will be good for all
future versions of GolfLog. NEVER destroy this file! Make a backup copy
and place it on a separate diskette in a safe place. Registered users
will be charged a replacement fee of $5.00 for a replacement copy of their
registered "key file". Each copy of GolfLog requires a "key file"

GETTING STARTED
───────────────
INSTALLATION
────────────
GolfLog can be run from a floppy diskette or from a hard disk. If
it is run from a floppy diskette use a new diskette with no other files
on it except GOLFLOG.COM and GL.KEY (GolfLog will run much slower on a
floppy diskette than when run from a hard disk).
If you run GolfLog from a hard disk, make a separate directory and
call it something like GOLF or GOLFLOG. Your prompt, when in this new
directory, should look similar to C:\GOLF> (Note that GolfLog will run
much faster on a hard disk than it will when run from a floppy). Copy
GOLFLOG.COM and GL.KEY to the new directory. No other file(s) need be
copied to this directory.
After you have GOLFLOG.COM and GL.KEY on a floppy diskette or in
a directory on your hard drive, simply type GOLFLOG and press your <Enter>
Key. This will bring up the Main Menu screen where you will see all the
options available to you. To save time, you may also rename GOLFLOG.COM
to GL.COM by typing REN GOLFLOG.COM GL.COM and press <Enter>.
USING THE MAIN MENU
───────────────────
You will note that the Options on the Main Menu are numbered from
1 through 7 and the last options are listed as "[P] Print Record", "[H]
Handicap Index", and "[Q] Quit GolfLog". Use the Up/Down Arrow Keys to
move about the menu and the selected Option will be highlighted in bright
white on a red background. The "Handicap Index" option and "Print
Record" options are available only to registered users.
To activate a highlighted Option, simply press your <Enter> Key when the
Option you wish to use is highlighted. Another method available is to
press the number of the Option you wish to use. Note that if you choose
to press a number key, it doesn't matter which Option is highlighted. If
Option #1 is highlighted and you wish to activate Option #4 then press the
<4> Key and the procedure called for at Option #4 will start. To quit
GolfLog v6.1, either move the highlight bar to the last Option and press
the <Enter> Key or press the <Q> Key and GolfLog v6.1 will end.

CREATING A COURSE RECORD
────────────────────────
The first thing you must do is create a Course Record for each golf
course you regularly play on. A Course Record need only be created ONE (1)
TIME. It will help if you have available a scorecard for each course that
you intend to create a Course Record for. Using your DownArrow Key, go to
Option #2, "Add Course Record. Press your <Enter> Key, and you will see a
screen asking for the name of the Course or Club. Type in the name of the
Club/Course and press <Enter>. The cursor will then advance to the City
question. Type in the name of the city where the course is located, press
<Enter> and then type in the two (2) letter abbreviation for the State and
again press <Enter>. The next question will ask you for the Front 9 Par.
This number can be found on the scorecard (it's usually somewhere around
36). Type in the Par for the first 9, or front 9 holes , press <Enter>
and do the same for the last 9, or back 9, holes. A simulated scorecard
will appear asking for the Par for each hole. Type in the Par for Hole #1,
press <Enter> and continue to type the Par for each hole, pressing <Enter>
after you type in the number. If the course is only a 9 hole course, it
will usually be designed with two different Tee Boxes for each hole,
effectively making it play as a full 18 hole course.
After entering the Par for each of the 18 holes, you will see 2
questions asking for the USGA Slope and USGA Rating. This information
can be obtained from your Club/Course Manager. To use the defaults
just press <Enter> without entering a figure. Next a box will appear
at the bottom of the screen indicating that you can press the <Escape>
Key to quit without saving this record, or you can press your <SpaceBar>
and the record will be saved as a permanent record. Before you press
the <Spacebar> to save the record, review the answers you gave to all the
questions. If they appear to be correct, then press <Spacebar> and the
record will be saved. You will then be returned to the Main Menu.
Repeat the above steps for each course you wish to create a record
for. After you have created at least one Course Record, you are ready
to add your Game Records. You do not have to create a Course Record each
time you add a game. Once a Course Record is saved it will remain in the
database and can be used anytime you want to add another game played on
that course.
Until registered, GolfLog v6.1 is limited to four (4) Game Records
and two (2) Course Records.

CREATING A GAME RECORD
──────────────────────
To create a new Game Record, choose Option #1, Add Game Record,
and you will be presented a screen showing a list of the Course Records
you have previously created. Choose the Course you want to make a Game
Record for by pressing the number to the left of the Course name. The
number will be yellow in color. Type the number you choose and press
your <Enter> Key. The next screen to appear will show the Course Name,
City, State, etc. The first question you need to answer is the date
the game was played. Acceptable date formats are 6/15/92, 6/15/1992,
6-15-92, or 6-15-1992. Use no separators other than "/" or "-" and
always follow the Month-Day-Year (MM-DD-YY or MM-DD-YYYY) format.
After entering the date, the next question will ask the name(s) of
your playing partner(s). Type in the name(s) or leave it blank by press-
ing <Enter> to advance to the next question. The name(s) cannot occupy
more than 30 characters total, so it's best to type only the first names
if you were playing in a foursome. If you're entering more than 1 name,
be sure to separate each name with a space. The names can be typed in all
upper case or all lower case and GolfLog will automagically make the first
letter in each name a capital letter and the balance in lower case.
The next question will ask you for the amount of the Green Fee paid.
Enter the amount or leave it blank by pressing <Enter> without typing any
amount. Do the same for the next question which asks the amount you paid
for a Cart Rental. DO NOT type a "$" (It's added automagically).
The next question asks how many holes you played. The only answers
acceptable here are 9 or 18. The default is 18 holes and you can simply
press <Enter> without typing anything here and the scorecard will indicate
18 holes. If you indicated that you played 9 holes, you will be asked to
indicate whether you played the front (first) 9 holes or the back (last)
9 holes. Type the letter "F" or "B" to indicate Front or Back.
Appearing now on the bottom half of your screen will be a listing
of the holes with the Par for each hole already showing. All you need do
here is enter the score you made on each hole. Be sure to press <Enter>
after you type the score before going to the next hole. After completing
the scores you'll be asked for the number of greens hit in regulation. A
"green hit in regulation" means the ball is on the green after 1 stroke
on a Par 3, after 2 strokes on a Par 4, and after 3 strokes on a Par 5.
Next you will be asked if you want to rate the Course. Press your <Y>
Key for Yes or your <N> Key for No. If you press "Y", a new screen will
appear and you will be asked to give a rating from 1 to 10 for each of
the following: Greens, Fairways, Course Layout, Facilities, and Personnel.
Skipping any of these 5 questions by pressing <Enter> without typing a
value will cause that item to be given a default value of 3.0

Appearing below the above questions, will be the question asking
you to press <Esc> to quit without saving the record or <SpaceBar> to
save the record as a permanent record. Press your choice of these two
keys and you will again be returned to the Main Menu. If you pressed the
<SpaceBar>, the record will be saved and you can pull it up for review
at anytime. You can enter a total of 90 Game records before you have
to create a new Game Record datafile. The shareware version is limited
to four (4) Game Records. The procedure to create a new Game Record
datafile for the registered version is explained later in this document.
REVIEWING RECORDS
─────────────────
After you have entered at least 1 Course Record and 1 Game Record
you can use the other options shown on the Main Menu screen. There's
two (2) different ways to find a given Game record. The first method
is to choose Option #3, "Review by Course" which will provide you with
a list showing Game Records sorted by Club/Course Name. Choose the 4th
option, "Review by Score" to get a list of Game Records sorted by Score.
Each of the above lists will have a Number in brackets "[ ]" to
the left of the Name, Date, or Score. Choose the Game Record you want
to review by typing the Record Number and pressing <Enter>.
The next screen to appear will show all the information you have
entered about this particular game. It will also show you the numbers
regarding everything from the elusive Ace (Hole in One) to those dreaded
"Others" which is any score that is more than 3 over Par for any hole
in that round of Golf. The rating you gave the course, club, etc. will
also be shown.
After reviewing the above information, press <Enter> to see your
scorecard for that round. If you have a Course Handicap, both the actual
score and the NET score with the handicap figured in will be shown. Par
for each hole will be shown with the score you shot for it shown to the
right. If the score for any hole is below Par, the number will be in
red. If the score is Par, the score will be shown in black. Any score
above Par will be shown in blue. The date the game was played will be
shown in the upper left corner of the scorecard and your Course Handi-
cap will be shown in the upper right corner.
After reviewing this screen, press <Enter> and you will be returned
to the Main Menu again.

╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
Option #5, "Summary of all Games" is a summary of all games you've
recorded. You will find this information most interesting as it provides
you with a list showing the total number of games played, total strokes
for all games combined, the total number of holes you've played, the
average strokes per hole, and percentage of greens hit in regulation.
Other information provided on the Summary of all Games include
the total for everything from a Hole-In-One to those dreaded "Others".
Below these figures will be the totals for all Green fees and Golf Cart
Rental fees paid.
After reviewing this information, press any key and you will be
returned to the Main Menu screen.
DELETING RECORDS
────────────────
In the event you wish to delete a Record choose Option #6, "Delete
Game Record" or Option #7, "Delete Course Record". Choosing either of
these options will show you a screen listing either all the Course Records
or all the Game Records. Select the Record Number you wish to delete by
typing the number shown in the left column in each listing and pressing
the <Enter> Key. Note that when a Record is deleted it will be removed
from the database permanently (it will not be recoverable)!
CREATING NEW DATAFILES (Not available unless registered)
──────────────────────
When GolfLog is first started, the default database that holds
the Game Records is named GOLF_LOG.DAT This file will hold a total of
90 Records (individual games). If this file becomes full (90 Records)
you must begin a new database file to hold any new Game Records. The
method to do this is simple. Just type GOLFLOG, skip 1 blank space and
type the name of the new database. This file can be named anything you
like as long as you follow the standard DOS naming guidelines. Basically
this name cannot contain more than 8 characters for the filename plus a
period "." followed by three characters for the extension. Shown on
the following page are examples that can be used. (See you DOS manual
for more information on how to name a file).

USGA Index
──────────
The USGA Index and Course Handicap are often misunderstood terms.
To put it as plainly as I know how, the USGA Index is a figure determined
by a formula developed by the United States Golf Association. Your Index
IS NOT YOUR HANDICAP. The Index is used to determine what your handicap
is (based on 2 factors unique to the course you're playing). Each course
should have an official USGA Slope somewhere between 90 and 140 with 90
being the low end (meaning an easy course). Each course should have an
official USGA Rating (from a low in the mid 60's to the mid 70's). These
two figures are used in conjunction with your USGA Index to figure your
"Course Handicap". While GolfLog v6.1 will do it for you, if you want to
to figure it on the spot, you multiply your USGA Index by the USGA Slope
of the course and tees to be played and then divide the resulting figure
by 113. This figure is then rounded off to the nearest whole number (.5
is rounded upward). This will give you your "Course Handicap" for that
course only. It's normal to have a different "Course Handicap" for each
course that you play. While your "Course Handicap" may be close to your
USGA Index, it can vary considerably based on the Slope and Rating of
a particular course. A score of 79 shot on a course rated 72.9/129 is
a better test of your golfing ability than a score of 78 shot on a course
rated 68.5/113. It's not unusual for someone who has a USGA Index of 12.3
to have a Course handicap ranging from 10 on an easy course to 15 on a
hard course. The Manager or "Club Pro" should be able to tell you just
what the Slope and Ratings are for their course. Beginning in 1991,
all courses affiliated with the United States Golf Association were re-
quired to have an official Slope and Rating. If the course you play is
not USGA sanctioned, then it's possible it may not have Slope and Rating
figures assigned.
***** N O T E ***** If the Index figure differs from the one assigned
to you by your Club (based on an official report from the USGA) then by
all means, use that one rather than the one assigned by GolfLog. The
Index computed by GolfLog **_should_** be accurate to within one half of
one percent of that established by the USGA.
The USGA Index, USGA Slope, USGA Rating, and USGA are all (C),
copyright, and (TM) trademarks of the United States Golf Association.
GolfLog v6.1 does not imply that the Index assigned by it is
your "official" USGA Index. That figure can only be "officially"
assigned to you by the United States Golf Association. Ask your Club
Manager for details about getting an official USGA Index

TIPS
────
GolfLog v6.1 has a few undocumented commands that will now become
documented.
1. At the first question in Add Game the user can press <Q> then
press <Enter> to quit and return to the Main Menu.
2. At the first question in Handicap Index the user can press the
<Enter> key without entering any other information and he/she
will be returned to the Main Menu.
3. At the first question in Add Course the user can press <Q> then
press <Enter> to quit and return to the Main Menu.
4. When asked to select a Record Number at the Add Game, Delete
Game, Delete Course, Print Record, Review Course, and Review
Score, the user can simply press <Enter> without entering any
information and he/she will be returned to the Main Menu.
5. The first question in Add Game and Add Course now requires
an answer of some type. The cursor will not move to the next
question until some type of data is entered and the <Enter>
key is pressed. This also applies to the first prompt for
the Par figure on Hole #1 and Hole #10 in Add Course.
6. When using Add Game, a score must be entered at each hole.
The cursor will not move to the next question until a number
is entered indicating the score at each hole.
7. The default values have changed for Club/Course Ratings from
a value of 4 to a value of 3. This means if you don't choose
to rate the Club/Course then each option will be given a value
of 3. This same value is applied if you do choose to do the
rating and just press <Enter> at each prompt without typing
any data.
8. New questions have been added to Add Game. These questions
are: "Number of Putts" which is the total number of putts you
you had in the whole game. "Fairways Hit" is the number of
fairways you hit from the Tee Box EXCLUDING Par 3 holes. Don't
include Par 3 holes in this figure. A prompt showing the number
of fairways available for the Course you're using will now
appear to the left of this question. This figure will be the
number of fairways less the number of Par 3 holes. The last
question "Sand saves" refers to the number of times you made
Par on a hole when your ball was in a greenside sand trap.

TIPS (Continued)
────
9. The "Summary of all Games" now shows NET Scores for 18 hole
games only. If you don't have any full 18 hole games recorded
in the database, then the NET figures will show as "0.00"
10. The NET figures in "Review by Course" and "Review by Score"
will still be compiled and shown for 9 hole games. These
figures are not however, used for the NET figures in the
"Summary of all Games."
11. If you have been using GolfLog v5.0 - v5.2 and you've used
the conversion program 5_TO_6.COM to update your database
several new figures will appear in the "Summary of all Games"
and in each Game Record. These new figures are based on a
default value assigned when the conversion is done. If you
wish to change these figures you must delete the Game Records
containing the figures you want to change and then add them
back into the database using the "Add Game" option at the
Main Menu.
12. Default values assigned by GolfLog v6.1 and 5_TO_6.COM are:
USGA Slope ................................ 113
USGA Rating ............................... 70.5
Number of Putts [ 9 hole games ] .......... 20
Number of Putts [ 18 hole games ] ......... 40
FairWays Hit [ 9 hole games ] ............. 5
FairWays Hit [ 18 hole games ] ............ 10
Greens in Regulation [ 9 hole games ] ..... 4
Greens in Regulation [ 18 hole games ] .... 7

WHAT GolfLog DOES
─────────────────
GolfLog is a database program that allows a Golfer to keep up
with the progress of his/her game in several different ways. It keeps
detailed accounts of each game and allows the user to pull up any Game
Record for an extensive review of that particular game. He/She can
locate records by reviewing different listings sorted in two (2)
different ways. In just seconds, a record is located by Course
or Score.
The Summary of all Games provides the Golfer with the totals of
many different facets of the game. If you want to know how many strokes
you have made since you started keeping records, it's in the Total Games
Summary. Other interesting items are also provided such as the average
strokes per hole (to 2 decimal places) for all the holes you've recorded,
the totals of all the Pars, Birdies, Bogeys, etc. for an entire golfing
season. This summary will probably be the most interesting and a very
informative source of game progress you will ever be able to find. Ever
wonder just how much you've spent on Green Fees and/or Cart Rental Fees?
It's right there in the "Summary of all Games". In an instant you will
be able to see just how many Pars you've made since you began keeping
records with GolfLog. New to v6.1 in this Summary is the total number of
Greens in regulation, the percentage of Greens in regulation, number and
percent of FairWays hit, and your overall putting average (putts per hole).
You can pull up for review, the scorecard for any game you`ve
recorded and check to see just what the score was on any hole you wish.
Ever need to know WHO you played what COURSE with on a given DATE and
what your SCORE was? No problem.! If you entered the names of your
playing partner(s) when you recorded the game, all that information is
right at your fingertips.
The user can create records for as many as 90 different courses.
You probably won't ever play on 90 different courses but is you're a
travelin' Golfer, the capability is there. An unlimited number of
individual games can be recorded so GolfLog can provide you with all you
want to know about your golf game statistics for many years to come.

REQUIREMENTS (See Appendix D for Printer instructions / requirements)
────────────
GolfLog requires a computer rated as being 100% IBM compatible.
Most clones on today's market will meet this requirement.
GolfLog requires a computer to have at least 640k of conventional
memory. Most computers available on the current market will
have 640k as a minimum with many offering 1 Megabyte or more.
If you encounter memory problems while running GolfLog, disable
any TSR (Terminate Stay Resident) you have running such as pop-up
clocks, note pads, other menus, etc. A minimum of 200k free
memory is an ideal operating enviornment for GolfLog v6.1
GolfLog requires a color monitor rated EGA or VGA.
NOTE *** GolfLog v6.1 can be used with a CGA monitor but the
number of records MUST BE LIMITED to 44 due to the inability of
a CGA monitor to shift to the 43/50 line mode required when the
number of records exceeds 44. When the user has recorded 45 or
more games, only the list of records will be shown in the 43 line
mode. All other screens will remain at the regular 25 line mode.
GolfLog requires that the user be running a version of DOS listed
as version 3.3 or higher (DOS version 5.0 is preferred).
Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain the following statements:
FILES=20 (or more)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS (or the directory where ANSI.SYS is located)
If running GolfLog v6.1 in a multitasking environment (Windows or
DESQview), set "Writes to screen" to YES.
GolfLog v6.1 has been tested on many different type and brands of
computers. It has never failed to work correctly on any of the
more than 30 different test machines. These machines varied from
8086 XT machines up to 80486 AT machines running at 50 Mhz. All
of the test machines were rated as being 100% IBM compatible.
WARRANTY
────────
No warranty of any type is either expressed or implied. If your
computer breaks in half while running GolfLog, you then own both
halves.

CHANGES IN v6.0 and v6.1
───────────────
The first major change is that GolfLog v6.1 requires a conversion
program for it to run correctly. The program is called 5_TO_6.COM and
is included in this archive/diskette. This utility (5_TO_6.COM) updates
the database file where all the Game Records are stored. It MUST be run
first BEFORE GolfLog v6.1 is started but ONLY if you are currently using
GolfLog v5.0 - v5.2 See Appendix E for more details.
You can still use all your old records created with the
previous versions of GolfLog. All you need to do for version 6.1
is to copy the new GOLFLOG.COM and 5_TO_6.COM files into the directory
where you now have the old version of GOLFLOG.COM You may delete
the old copy of GOLFLOG.COM or just copy this new version right over
the top of the old version.
Other changes include the addition of the "greens in regulation"
"fairways hit", and "sand saves". Minor cosmetic changes were made to
some of the screens for a more suitable color contrast.
PRINTING RECORDS
────────────────
GolfLog v6.1 requires a printer to be Epson/IBM compatible.
As most modern printers on the market today meet these standards,
you should have no problems running GolfLog v6.1 It is important
that your printer be set to print the standard IBM character set
including the "high ASCII" characters. See your printer manual
for instructions on how to make these settings. You will now be
asked for a Printer Port number. You have the option of using Port
number 1 (LPT1) or Port number 2 (LPT2). After this selection is
made and you press <P> to print, GolfLog v6.1 will check the status
of the Printer Port and Printer then report back if something is not
working properly or the printer hasn't been turned On.

When To Use 5_TO_6.COM
*** WARNING ***
If you have never used GolfLog v5.0 - v5.2 then DO NOT RUN
5_TO_6.COM It is intended for those users who have used versions of
GolfLog prior to v6.0 DO NOT RUN 5_TO_6.COM if you're running v6.0
==========================================================================
If you are currently using GolfLog v5.0 or v5.1 or v5.2 then:
It is imperative that 5_TO_6 be run BEFORE starting to use this
new copy of GolfLog v6.1 This program (5_TO_6.COM) makes some major
modifications to the existing GolfLog database file. This file is
normally called GOLF_LOG.DAT however if you have the registered version
you may have changed it's name to something else.
See the document 5_TO_6.DOC for complete instructions on how to
use 5_TO_6.COM
Once you have run 5_TO_6.COM do not run it again. It only takes
one pass for the changes to be made. Running it more than once will
corrupt the new database file.
After running 5_TO_6, then running the new copy of GOLFLOG.COM,
you will notice several more detailed figures about your golf game.

DEFINITIONS
───────────
Here's a few terms, in no particular order, that you will either
come across while using GolfLog v6.1 or out on the course playing
with friends.
Sand Save: This is when you save Par from a greenside sand trap.
Greens in Regulation: For Par 3 holes this means landing the
ball on the green on the first shot off the Tee.
For Par 4 holes this means landing the ball on the
green on the second shot.
For Par 5 holes this means landing the ball on the
green on the third shot.
Number of FairWays: This is the number of fairways, exclusive
of Par 3 holes, on the course. This number is usually
around 14 as most courses have two Par 3 holes on the
Front 9 and two more on the Back 9.
FairWays Hit: For all holes other than Par 3 holes, this means
landing the ball in the fairway on the first shot off
the Tee. If you miss the green on a Par 3 hole and land
in the fairway, DO NOT count this as a "fairway hit".
Stroke Average: This is your average score from all full (18
hole) games. Note that 9 holes games/scores are not
included in the Stroke Average.
NET Score: This is the score after deducting your Course
Handicap (if you have one established) from the total
game score.
Putting Average: The average number of putts per hole.
Course Index/Handicap: This is your handicap for the Course
being played. This figure is determined by using a
formula developed by the U.S.G.A. using the Index that
has been established for you based on a minimum of the
last five full (18 hole) game scores. These scores
are GROSS scores and not NET scores.

╘══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╛
U.S.G.A.: The United States Golf Association
P.G.A.: The Professional Golfers Association.
USGA Index: This figure is based on a formula developed by the
U.S.G.A. GolfLog can do this for you after you have
recorded a minimum of five full (18 hole) games. It's
used to determine your Course Handicap. A player should
not play off his/her USGA Index as it can be as much as
three strokes or more different than your Course handicap.
For more details about your USGA Index and Course Handicap,
consult your local PGA Professional or club manager.
Sandbagger: A player who shoots lower scores than he/she is
capable of so his/her USGA Index will be high and cause
him/her to play with players who are actually worse players.
You will hear this term around local golf tournaments when
players are being placed in "flights/brackets" based on
their handicap.
Closest to the hole: Local tournaments usually draw a circle
around the pin on one or more of the Par 3 holes and
give prizes to the person that lands his/her Tee shot
closest to the hole within the circle.
Longest drive award: Local tournaments usually designate one or
more of the long straight Par 5 fairways as the "long
drive hole". The player hitting his/her drive the long-
est off the Tee wins this award. Note that the ball must
land, and remain in, the fairway for it to be counted.
Per Hole Average: The average number of strokes per hole based on
the total number of all games/holes played.
